History

Hijama cupping therapy was established over 1400 years ago, during the advent of Islam in Saudi Arabia. The practice of “Hijama" was introduced and became an extension of general acupuncture cupping. It is a completely separate therapy from regular cupping and is a whole treatment in its own right as it is based on religion and faith.

Muslims practice Hijama based on what was ordained by Allah (swt) and practiced by Muhammad (pbuh). Hijama literally means “Sucking” in Arabic and is the Islamic term used for what is known as “Wet Cupping”. This is where small, superficial incisions are made on the skin that was being dry cupped. The suction pressure under the cup would then stimulate the toxic or unhealthy blood to trickle out and cleanse the diseased or inflamed area of pain on the body. It is also known as Hijamah, Hijaama, Hijaamah, Hajama, and Bekam in some counties. .

“Jibreel (Angel Gabriel) has informed me that Hijama Cupping is the most useful medication for People.” Stated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as reported by Abu Hurayrah (recorded by al Hakim, verified to be authentic by al Albani [Sahih ul Jami # 218])

Cupping (Hijama) is the best remedy recommended and used by the Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (Hijama)…" [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371)]. The messenger also said that on the night of Israa (his ascension to the heavens) the messenger did not pass by an angel except that it said to him, "Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama)." [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)].

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Hijama does not hurt at all providing it is done properly by a qualified Practitioner. It does however come with some 'strange' or 'ticklish' sensations which only last for a few moments. Only a light amount of pressure is needed just enough to break the upper layer of the skin like "scratches". The incisions should be superficial otherwise anything more than that would be too deep and it would make the healing process longer and could ultimately lead to infections and scarring.

Is it dangerous?

Not at all remember this is a sunnah and anything from the sunnah wouldn’t harm us rather the opposite it is beneficial to us. Just remember as long as you are in the hands of a qualified practitioner you have nothing to worry about.

Is it safe?

Yes, when practiced in a clean and hygienic environment under the guidance of a qualified practitioner Hijama is relatively risk free.

Does it leave a marks?

Both dry and wet cupping can leave round bruise like marks on the surface of the skin and can last from 3-10 days and gradually fades away. In wet cupping the scratches made on the surface of the skin this too will completely fade away within similar timescales depending on individual skin type.

What are the Sunnah dates?

17th, 19th, and 21st day (of the Islamic Lunar month)

Can it be performed only on adults?

Men and women are allowed to have the treatments and it is recommended for all ages and all ailments
